A construction company is trying to build a Supreme Court on the site of the old courthouse on the southern edge of Atlanta.
A lawsuit is pending against the Atlanta-based company, which plans to use the old Federal Courthouse as a parking lot and an event venue.
The construction company says it is using the old building to store a hotel and hotel suites.
But the lawsuit filed in Fulton County Circuit Court by Georgia Construction & Leasing says it has no legal right to the building because it is on Federal land.
That means the county will have to find a different owner to operate the building.
The company plans to move forward with the project without the help of Georgia Department of Natural Resources, which will need to find another owner, said David Lipscomb, a Georgia attorney who is representing the construction company.
The Georgia Department said it would work with the county to determine whether the construction of a new courthouse is feasible and that a decision will be made in the coming weeks.
“The Georgia DNR and the Georgia Department are continuing to work collaboratively to secure the project, and we will continue to support the construction process in the interim,” DNR Director of Government Relations Julie Eberhardt said in a statement.
